Hi, I'm Cate
I run Bedminster Tai Chi.
I first encountered Tai Chi while living in Guangzhou, China, where I was teaching English. In the mornings, I would sometimes join a faculty member for practice. I didn’t know what much of it meant at the time, but I remember how it felt: calm, steady, and quietly absorbing.
That stayed with me. Back in the UK, I returned to Tai Chi and, in 2025, chose to deepen my practice by training as an instructor with the Bristol-based School of Tai Chi for All.
I now teach in a way that reflects that experience: relaxed, welcoming, and focused on helping people move and breathe more comfortably, without pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions
🍃 Do I need any previous experience?
Not at all. Beginners are welcome at every class, and you don't need to know any Tai Chi or Qigong movements before joining. You'll learn by following along, gradually becoming more familiar with the movements at your own pace in a calm and supportive environment.
🍃 When and where are the classes?
Our regular classes take place weekly across Bedminser at Windmill Hill Community Hall, BS3 Southville Centre, and Studio 180.
We also hold occasional outdoor sessions at South Street Park, depending on the weather.
Check the website for the latest timetable.
🍃 Do I need to book in advance?
Spaces are limited so it is recommend to reserve your place, particularly if you're attending for the first time. You can book in to a session by text, email or through our online booking page.
🍃 How much do classes cost?
Indoor classes cost £8 per session, payable by cash, card or bank transfer.
A Six-Class Pass costs £45 (£7.50 per class). Passes are valid for three months and can be used at any of the regular classes.
Outdoor sessions are free, with donations welcome.
🍃 How fit or flexible do I need to be?
You don't need to be particularly fit, strong or flexible. Shibashi uses gentle, flowing movements that can be practised within your own comfortable range. There is no need to stretch further or move faster than feels right for you.
🍃 What should I wear?
There's no need for special clothing or equipment. Comfortable shoes, and clothes you can move in easily are all you need.
🍃 Can the movements be adapted to suit different abilities?
Yes. Movements can often be made smaller, slower or modified to accommodate different levels of mobility. The aim is to move comfortably and with awareness, rather than achieve a perfect shape.
If you have a health condition or concerns about taking part, please speak to an appropriate healthcare professional and let Cate know before class.
🍃 Can I bring a support worker or carer?
Of course. A support worker accompanying someone to class can attend free of charge. They're welcome to participate in the session or simply sit and observe.
🍃 Do I need to attend regularly?
There's no requirement to attend every week. Each class is designed so you can join in regardless of how often you've practised before.
Regular attendance can help you remember the movements and develop a more familiar, flowing practice. Spaces are limited, so you're welcome to reserve a place whenever you'd like to come along.
🍃 What's the difference between Tai Chi, Qigong and Shibashi?
Qigong is a broad term for Chinese practices combining movement, breathing and focused attention.
Tai Chi originated as a Chinese martial art and is also widely practised for its slow, coordinated movements.
Shibashi is a form of Qigong inspired by Tai Chi. It brings together gentle movements in structured sets of eighteen, making it particularly approachable for beginners.
🍃 Is Shibashi a religious or spiritual practice?
No religious belief is necessary to practise Shibashi.
Its roots lie in traditional Chinese approaches to movement, breathing and the cultivation of qi (often translated as vital energy). Some people enjoy exploring these ideas, while others simply appreciate the physical movements, concentration and quiet time.
You can approach the practice in whichever way feels meaningful to you.
🍃 Can I practise Shibashi at home?
Absolutely. Even a few minutes of gentle practice can help you become more familiar with the movements between classes. Let Cate know if you'd like a list of the movements practised in each class, so you can continue practising at home.
